Rain Stops Play in January
The latest Golf Datatech National Rounds Played Report with results for January 2024 is published today with year over year results for eight regions, all states and several metropolitan areas. US rounds were down -16.6% for January 2-24 and YTD when compared to January 2023.
As most of the US slogged through a very wet and cold month, the biggest declines were seen in the Southeast an South Central, where rain was up significantly and temperatures lower.
Compared to January 2023, the best performing states were CA and AZ: Two major golf markets, which endured very challenging weather in January of 2023, and were able to see an improvement against that relatively low bar.
On the latest results, Golf Datatech co-founder John Krzynowek said, “January is not a crucial month for rounds played, as it only represents roughly 3% of total rounds played for the year. Much of the country is typically closed due to winter weather in January and large swings can happen when the weather shifts, as golf is being played in a relatively small piece of the country. That said, the golf business never likes to start off in a deep hole, but a February thaw might allow us to make up a lot of ground when next months data becomes available.”
